Fran Romer Workshop

Calling all Booktalk enthusiasts!

The Young Adult Services Division of the Suffolk County Library Association is looking for discussion leaders for our annual Fran Romer Workshop on Thursday, March 9, 2017 from 10 am – 1 pm at the Brentwood Public Library.  The theme this year is “Stories Retold”

Discussion leaders are needed to lead groups of approximately 10-12 librarians, discussing specific Teen books with the “stories retold” theme.  The focus of Fran Romer is Booktalking!  We would like leaders to give a booktalk and to demonstrate to the group how librarians can book talk at their own library.

FYI…What is a Booktalk?

·         A booktalk is NOT a review or a book "report." A book report tells somebody you read the book, a booktalk tries to convince the person to read the book. The key to booktalking is to "sell, don't tell." Thus, a booktalk is more of an advertisement or a commercial.

·         A booktalk is a Performance - you want to "hook" the listeners, use every trick you can think of to make the booktalk fun, exciting, and suspenseful.

YASD February Joint Meeting

Thursday, February 2nd, 9:30am-12pm, at SCLS, Bellport, join the Suffolk and Nassau YASD to get tips on how you can build onto your resume and advance your career. Presenters will be focusing on becoming an adjunct professor, conference presenting, joining different committees/organization and book reviewing. 

Call for Speakers!!!

Have you been an adjunct professor?  Reviewed books for a professional publication?  Presented at a conference or joined a professional committee?  Would you like an opportunity to share your experience with your peers?  If so, then this is your chance!  

YASD is looking for volunteers to speak at the "Career Booster" Joint Meeting being held on  Thursday, February 2, 10am, at SCLS. We would like the meeting to focus on the above mentioned aspects of boosting your career.  This is a great opportunity to share your experiences and help others.  If you are interested in becoming a speaker, please contact Casey Fehn at casey@myrml.org.

YASD December Luncheon

The YASD December Luncheon Registration date has been extended until November 28th.  Please see blog post below for registration information.

Annual December Luncheon!

Our Annual December Luncheon will be held on Thursday, December 1st, beginning at noon at the Outerbanks Restaurant in Riverhead. The speaker will be Nova Ren Suma, author of The Walls Around Us, The Imaginary Girls, 17 and Gone, and more!  The menu includes a chicken, fish, and pasta vegetarian option.  Exciting prizes will be raffled and you will be introduced to the 2017 YASD Board.  You can register online here or fill out the below form and send it to Casey Fehn.
