Hurricane Relief

Superstorm Sandy has left behind immeasurable grief for our communities.  We are asking you to support our fund-raising effort on behalf of the community of library workers in Suffolk County affected by the storm.  These people are our family, and we must care for them. Some lost their homes and possessions, some suffered severe damages.  We can’t fix that, but we can show them we care with a monetary gift.  The Public Library Directors Association of Suffolk and the Suffolk County Library Association have joined together with SCLS to create a fund to support this effort.

To donate go to http://gateway.suffolklibrarysystem.org/content/donate-hurricane-relief and click on the Donate button. Please fill in a donation amount, payment information, and choose "Library Staff Hurricane Relief" in the dropdown menu. Your generosity is appreciated.

Brooklyn Book Festival

If you missed this year's Brooklyn Book Festival here is a nice pictorial  recap from PW.  The weather was gorgeous and authors extraordinary!  The highlight of my day was hearing the amazing Libba Bray speak to a small group of librarians.  When asked what advice she would give aspiring teen writers she said:
"Read-read everything you possibly can!" and "Be Brave."

In close 2nd was a hilarious round of YA Jeopardy featuring Libbb Bray, Natalie Standiford and Daniel Nayeri.

Librarians for Life

Support your fellow Librarians by donating to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

Our Reason to Relay:
We are making a difference by teaming up to participate in the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life.

At the event, the Librarians for Life will camp out overnight and take turns walking around the track to raise money and awareness to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

Saving lives from cancer starts one team, one participant, and one dollar at a time. Our team is doing our part to make sure that cancer never steals another year of anyone's life.

Please join our team or make a donation. The impact we can make together is much greater than what any of us could do alone!

You can donate at the Librarians for Life Page

Thank you to everyone who supports this great cause!

The ALA LinkedIn group page has a ton of interesting discussions. Some of the most popular discussions surround social media in the library. This article was originally written and published late December 2011, however, 4 months later still has relevance as well all continue to navigate and incorporate social media into our libraries. Below is a link to the original posting as well as the ALA's LinkedIn page.

What are your libraries doing to increase traffic through social media? How have you integrated social media into your library programs?

SAVE THE DATE: The Annual Fran Romer Workshop

SAVE THE DATE: April 20th, 2012 from 9am - 1pm. The Annual Fran Romer Workshop will be held at the Brentwood Public Library and feature Caroline Beck, author of L.I.E.

Recap: Nassau/Suffolk Joint Meeting with Gayle Forman

Yesterday's joint Nassau/Suffolk YASD meeting was a success! We had a great crowd attend, who were all looking forward to catching up with each other, meeting new people across both counties and getting the opportunity to listen to Gayle Forman speak. During the refreshments, before Gayle took the stage, there was a lot of chatter across the room, a lot of laughs and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, especially once they had a delicious cupcake! Once Gayle began to speak, notebooks came about, the room silenced and everyone gave her their full attention. Taking a different spin on a discussion of her books, Gayle talked about the books we wouldn't read, or that were likely to never get published, the writing she has done, that has lead to her currently best sellers. She was an engaging speaker and gave the audience a real insight into her writing process. After her presentation and few quick readings from her most popular books If I stay and Where She Went, along with glimpses into those pieces we will never see, she opened the floor to questions. The YA librarians love a good Q&A session. There were many questions ranging from musical impacts on writing, discussions on her editors and other popular YA authors, and how eBooks are changing the way people read and the way books get published. Overall, the discussion was robust.

After, Gayle was very generous to stick around and signed books for everyone. The line was long, but she stayed, and everyone had the pleasure of quickly speaking with her, a great capstone to an excellent program.

A job well done to the Suffolk and Nassau YASD members who put together a wonderful event. And a huge thank you to Gayle Forman!

Librarian Humor: Boolean Connectors

This is the first installment of a new segment called Librarian Humor, it will include videos, photos, annedotes and anything else funny related to a Librarian's world. Librarian Humor - others just don't seem to get it!

The following video was sent across to me from a friend and fellow Librarian. It is a funny video of a lesson done by a librarian on Boolean connectors. The use of food and her great accent make for an entertaining video.

If I was doing this lesson it would be Strawberry Jelly AND (Chunky Peanut Butter OR Creamy Peanut Butter).

Feel free to submit your Library Humor, to be included in future posts, to Jessica Schnall at jessicadschnall@gmail.com
